Jim - there is nothing inherent in WordPress that makes it hackable. ANY site can be hacked. WordPress sites get targeted by hackers simply because over 10% of every site on the net runs on WordPress. Keep the software and plugins updated, practice reasonable protection (good passwords) and you really don't have to worry about your site being hacked. That's where a managed hosting solution (like WPEngine) can come in handy. They do the updating for you.
